Excavator vs TLB — Which Certificate Do You Actually Need?

🏗️ EXCAVATOR

  • Best for: Deep or large-scale digging, bulk excavation, foundation work
  • Versatility: Digging and slewing only, but far greater depth and reach than a TLB
  • Common Alberton use: Foundation work for new Alrode South manufacturing and warehousing facilities
  • Certificate: SAQA Unit Standard 262744 (CETA), NQF Level 2, 15 credits
  • 🚜 TRACTOR LOADER BACKHOE (TLB)

  • Best for: Trenching, loading and general site work at moderate depths
  • Versatility: Front loader AND rear backhoe in one machine
  • Common Alberton use: General civil site work and trenching for services
  • Certificate: SAQA Unit Standard 262727 (CETA), NQF Level 2, 15 credits
  • WHICH ONE DO YOU NEED?

If your work is deep excavation, foundations or bulk earthmoving — you need the excavator certificate. If your work is general site tasks and moderate trenching — a TLB covers it. Many Alberton industrial contractors need both; you can complete Excavator Training and TLB Training back to back at our Germiston campus.

The OHS Act’s Driven Machinery Regulations require all excavator operators to hold a formal Certificate of Competency aligned to SAQA Unit Standard 262744 before operating an excavator on any site.

🏗️ ALRODE SOUTH'S ACTIVE INDUSTRIAL EXPANSION

Positioned as a strategic hub for manufacturing, engineering and warehousing, Alrode South’s ongoing development requires certified excavator operators for foundation work at every new facility built.

    🍺 SAB'S R1.3 BILLION BREWERY EXPANSION

The scale of SAB’s recently completed brewery expansion in Alrode required extensive foundation and civil work, and ongoing facility maintenance continues to generate demand for certified excavator operators.

🚢 LOGISTICS AND CONTAINER DEPOT FACILITY DEVELOPMENT

New warehousing and distribution centre construction supporting Alrode’s container depot and freight-forwarding operators requires certified excavator operators for foundation and bulk earthworks.

🏭 STEEL FABRICATION AND AUTOMOTIVE ASSEMBLY EXPANSION

Alrode’s steel fabrication and automotive assembly firms require certified excavator operators for facility expansion and foundation work.

  • What Alberton Students Say About Excavator Training at United Training Centre

"I worked as a site labourer for a contractor doing foundation work on a new warehouse in Alrode South. When the foundation work ramped up, my supervisor said I could move onto the excavator if I got certified. Germiston was a manageable drive, so I commuted daily for the week and was operating on-site the following week."
