A Front End Loader (FEL) — also known as a wheel loader or bucket loader — is a large wheeled machine with a wide hydraulic bucket mounted at the front. It is used to scoop, lift, carry and load bulk materials such as soil, sand, gravel, rock, grain and ore.

Unlike a TLB which has both a front bucket and rear backhoe, the Front End Loader is a dedicated loading machine — designed for high-volume material handling in the fastest possible time. This makes it one of the most productive and widely used machines in South Africa’s mining, mining and construction sectors.

Front End Loaders are used across North West and South Africa for:

  • Loading trucks and dump trucks at quarries and mines
  • Stockpiling materials on construction sites and aggregate yards
  • Clearing and levelling sites before construction begins
  • Loading ore, materials and supplies at mining operations
  • Moving bulk materials in manufacturing and processing plants
  • Road base preparation and gravel spreading on road projects
  • Loading ore and bulk materials at mining transfer stations
  • In the Platinum Belt region, FEL operators are employed on platinum mines, smelters, construction projects in Rustenburg and Brits, and quarrying operations throughout the Bojanala District. A certified FEL operator is in demand year-round across multiple industries.

What Our Rustenburg FEL Students Say

"I was a general worker at a chrome mining yard in Rustenburg. I decided to do my FEL training at United Training Centre. The free accommodation meant I could stay for the full week without worrying about transport. Within two weeks of finishing I was operating the yard's FEL loader and my salary increased significantly. Best investment I made in my career."
