First Aid Training South Africa
Accredited Level 1, 2 and 3 Certificates 2026

United Training Centre offers accredited First Aid Level 1, 2 and 3 training across South Africa — qualifying workplace first aiders to respond effectively to medical emergencies, injuries and life-threatening situations on any worksite, factory, mine, office or construction project.

Every South African employer with more than 5 employees is legally required under the OHS Act 85 of 1993 to ensure that a qualified, currently certified first aider is on duty at all times. An expired or absent first aider is an OHS Act violation — one that the Department of Labour takes seriously during inspections.

United Training Centre’s First Aid courses are CETA accredited, accepted by all major employers and DOL inspectors, and delivered by qualified medical and emergency response facilitators. 5 days per level. R2,500. 5 locations across South Africa. Free accommodation included.

First Aid training in South Africa equips designated workplace first aiders with the knowledge and practical skills to provide immediate, life-saving assistance to injured or ill persons before emergency medical services arrive. The South African first aid qualification system is structured in three progressive levels — each building on the previous one, with increasing depth of medical knowledge and practical skill.

FIRST AID LEVEL 1 — BASIC EMERGENCY RESPONSE

First Aid Level 1 is the entry-level qualification. It covers basic emergency life support — the immediate actions a first aider must take in the first minutes of a medical emergency before professional help arrives.

  • Duration: 5 days
  • Valid for: 3 years from date of issue
  • Who needs it: Every designated workplace first aider; suitable for any industry or workplace size
  • Legal basis: Required under the OHS Act for all workplaces — 1 first aider per 50 employees minimum
  • FIRST AID LEVEL 2 — INTERMEDIATE CARE

First Aid Level 2 builds on Level 1 and covers more advanced assessment, wound management, fracture care and patient monitoring. Level 2 is required in higher-risk environments where workers are exposed to greater injury potential.

  • Duration: 5 days
  • Valid for: 3 years
  • Who needs it: Workplaces with elevated risk — construction sites, mines, factories, agricultural operations
  • Prerequisite: Valid First Aid Level 1 certificate
  • FIRST AID LEVEL 3 — ADVANCED FIRST RESPONDER

First Aid Level 3 is the most comprehensive level — covering advanced patient assessment, trauma management, spinal precautions, childbirth emergencies and mass casualty incident response.

  • Duration: 5 days
  • Valid for: 3 years
  • Who needs it: Mine rescue teams, construction site emergency teams, senior designated first aiders
  • Prerequisite: Valid First Aid Level 2 certificate
  • FIRST AID LEVEL 3 — ADVANCED FIRST RESPONDER

Students who wish to complete all three levels consecutively can do so at United Training Centre — 15 days in total for the complete Level 1, 2 and 3 qualification. Contact us on +27 81 795 8133 to discuss a combined level package and pricing.

Why First Aid Training is a Legal Requirement Under the OHS Act

First Aid is not optional in South African workplaces. The Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and its accompanying First Aid Regulations create specific, enforceable legal requirements for every employer.

KEY OHS ACT PROVISIONS THAT DRIVE SAFETY OFFICER DEMAND

Every employer must ensure that an adequate number of employees are trained in first aid. The minimum requirement under the regulations is:

  • 1 trained, currently certified First Aid Level 1 first aider per every 50 employees
  • Higher-risk workplaces (construction, mining, manufacturing) are expected to have first aiders at all times on every active shift
  • The first aider must hold a VALID certificate — an expired certificate does not satisfy the legal requirement
  • WHAT COUNTS AS "ADEQUATE"?

The OHS Act does not prescribe a single ratio for all workplaces. The First Aid Regulations require the employer to conduct a risk assessment to determine how many first aiders are needed. In practice:

  • Office environments: 1 first aider per 50 employees
  • Construction sites: 1 per shift, minimum
  • Mines: as per the Mine Health and Safety Act (additional requirements apply)
  • Manufacturing plants: 1 per department or section, minimum
  • Agricultural operations: 1 per 50 workers minimum
  • FIRST AID EQUIPMENT — REGULATION 5

Every workplace must have a first aid box stocked with the prescribed contents. The first aider is responsible for inspecting and restocking the first aid box regularly. The Safety Officer must ensure the first aid box records are maintained.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU HAVE NO QUALIFIED FIRST AIDER?

  • Department of Labour inspectors can issue an Improvement Notice requiring immediate compliance
  • A Section 54 stop-work notice can halt all operations at the site
  • If a worker is injured and no first aider is available, the employer faces criminal prosecution for failure to comply with the First Aid Regulations
  • Company insurance may refuse to cover incidents where OHS Act first aid requirements were not met
  • Personal liability of the Health and Safety Officer and management for the resulting harm
  • FIRST AID CERTIFICATE VALIDITY AND RENEWAL

A First Aid certificate in South Africa is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. After 3 years the certificate expires and the first aider must complete a renewal course and new assessment. Operating with an expired First Aid certificate is the same as having no first aider at all — it does not satisfy the OHS Act requirement. United Training Centre offers First Aid renewal courses at all 5 branches.

United Training Centre’s First Aid courses are delivered by qualified facilitators with real emergency medical response experience. Each level is a 5-day practical and theory programme — not a classroom-only course. Students practice every skill on manikins, in simulated scenarios and with real first aid equipment.

  • First Aid training is required across every sector and every type of workplace in South Africa. Here is who specifically needs to enroll:

    DESIGNATED WORKPLACE FIRST AIDERS

  • Any employee formally appointed as the designated first aider for their workplace or shift
  • Their certificate must be valid — expired certificates do not satisfy the OHS Act requirement
  • Level 1 is the minimum qualification for any workplace designation
  • EMPLOYERS AND HR MANAGERS

  • Responsible for ensuring their workplace has a valid, currently certified first aider at all times
  • Must renew first aider certificates every 3 years before they expire
  • Must maintain a register of all first aiders and their certificate expiry dates
  • United Training Centre offers group bookings and renewals for companies — call +27 81 795 8133
  • CONSTRUCTION SITES

  • Every active construction site must have a first aider on every shift under the Construction Regulations
  • Every active construction site must have a first aider on every shift under the Construction Regulations
  • MINE WORKERS AND MINE EMPLOYEES

  • Mines are required to have first aiders in addition to mine rescue teams
  • Level 2 or Level 3 is typically required in mining environments
  • MHSA requirements for first aid on mines go beyond the basic OHS Act provisions
  • MANUFACTURING AND ENGINEERING FACILITIES

  • Every shift in a factory, fabrication shop or engineering facility should have a designated first aider
  • Level 2 is recommended for high-risk manufacturing environments
  • AGRICULTURAL OPERATIONS

  • Farms, packhouses and agro-processing facilities must comply with the OHS Act
  • The remote locations of agricultural operations make first aid training even more critical — emergency services can be far away
  • SCHOOLS, CRÈCHES AND CARE FACILITIES

  • Education facilities and childcare providers have a duty of care to their learners
  • Level 1 is required for any facility caring for children or vulnerable persons
  • ANYONE WANTING A LIFE SKILL

  • First Aid is not just a work requirement — it is a life skill
  • Knowing how to perform CPR or manage a bleeding wound could save the life of a family member, colleague or stranger
  • Level 1 is strongly recommended for every adult in South Africa regardless of occupation
  • Every First Aid certificate in South Africa is valid for exactly 3 years from the date of issue. After 3 years the certificate expires — and an expired first aider is the same as having no first aider at all under the OHS Act.

    WHY RENEWAL MATTERS

  • An employer with an expired first aider certificate is in direct violation of the OHS Act First Aid Regulations
  • If an incident occurs and the designated first aider's certificate is found to be expired, the employer faces criminal prosecution and the insurance claim may be invalidated
  • Site safety auditors check first aider certificate dates as a standard audit item
  • Department of Labour inspectors specifically look for expired first aid certificates during inspections
  • HOW TO RENEW YOUR FIRST AID CERTIFICATE AT UNITED TRAINING CENTRE

Renewal is straightforward. Call us on +27 81 795 8133 or WhatsApp to confirm your level and book your renewal intake. Bring:

  • Your original South African ID or Smart ID card
  • Your expired or expiring First Aid certificate (copy acceptable if original is lost)
  • One recent passport photograph
  • Payment of R2,500 (per level)
  • The renewal course is a refresher — it covers the core competencies of your level, updates you on any changes to protocols, and conducts a practical and written reassessment. Most renewal students complete the course in 2 to 3 days, depending on their level.

CORPORATE FIRST AID RENEWAL — MANAGE YOUR TEAM'S COMPLIANCE

Many companies have multiple first aiders with different expiry dates. United Training Centre helps HR and Safety Officers track renewal dates and schedule group renewals before compliance gaps appear. Call +27 81 795 8133 to discuss a corporate renewal schedule for your team.

What Our First Aid Training Students Say

"I manage HR for a construction company in Nelspruit. We had a DOL inspection coming up and discovered that three of our designated first aiders had expired certificates. I called United Training Centre on a Monday morning and they had all three of our employees enrolled in the First Aid Level 1 renewal course starting that Wednesday. By the following Tuesday all three had their new CETA certificates in hand. The DOL inspector arrived on Thursday and we passed the inspection with no compliance issues relating to first aid. The facilitator at United Training Centre was excellent — very practical and clearly experienced in real emergency situations, not just theory. We now schedule all our first aid renewals through United Training Centre 3 months before expiry. I would not use anyone else."

First Aid Training South Africa — Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and the First Aid Regulations require every employer to ensure that a trained, currently certified first aider is available in the workplace at all times. The minimum requirement is one qualified first aider per 50 employees. Higher-risk workplaces — construction, mining, manufacturing — require first aiders on every active shift. An expired first aider certificate does not satisfy the legal requirement.
First Aid Level 1 covers basic emergency life support — CPR, bleeding control, shock management and basic medical emergency response. It is the minimum legal requirement for all workplaces. Level 2 builds on Level 1 with fracture management, spinal precautions, paediatric first aid and environmental emergencies — required in higher-risk environments. Level 3 covers advanced trauma, triage, airway management, mass casualty incidents and emergency childbirth — required for mine rescue teams and senior emergency responders. Each level requires a valid certificate from the previous level.
A First Aid certificate in South Africa is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. After 3 years the certificate expires and the first aider must complete a renewal course and reassessment to obtain a new valid certificate. Employers must track their first aiders’ certificate expiry dates and renew before expiry — an expired certificate is an OHS Act violation. United Training Centre offers First Aid renewal at all 5 branches, starting from R2,500.
The OHS Act First Aid Regulations require a minimum of one qualified first aider per 50 employees. However, the regulations also require employers to determine the adequate number through risk assessment. In practice: office environments — 1 per 50 employees; construction sites — at least 1 per active shift; mines — as per the Mine Health and Safety Act requirements (additional obligations apply); manufacturing facilities — at least 1 per department or work section.
Each First Aid level at United Training Centre runs for 5 days — one full working week of theory, practical skills training and final assessment. Level 1 is 5 days, Level 2 is 5 days and Level 3 is 5 days. Students who want to complete multiple levels consecutively can do so — contact us on +27 81 795 8133 to arrange a combined level programme.
United Training Centre charges R2,500 per First Aid level. This includes all training materials, practical skills equipment, the CETA-accredited assessment and your certificate on successful completion. Free accommodation is provided for students from outside the local area at no additional cost. Group pricing is available for companies enrolling 5 or more employees — call +27 81 795 8133 for a group quote.
First Aid Level 1 covers: emergency scene assessment (DRABC), adult CPR and rescue breathing, AED (defibrillator) use, choking management, bleeding control and wound care, shock recognition and management, burns first aid (heat, chemical and electrical), poisoning and overdose response, diabetic emergencies, seizure management, stroke recognition (FAST), and recovery position. United Training Centre delivers Level 1 over 5 days with practical manikin and scenario training throughout.
No. First Aid Level 2 requires a valid First Aid Level 1 certificate as a prerequisite. Similarly, Level 3 requires a valid Level 2 certificate. The levels are progressive — each one builds directly on the knowledge and skills of the previous level. If your Level 1 certificate has expired you must renew it before progressing to Level 2. United Training Centre offers all three levels and renewal courses at 5 locations nationwide.
Construction sites in South Africa fall under both the OHS Act and the Construction Regulations 2014. The minimum legal requirement is First Aid Level 1 for the designated first aider. However, because construction sites carry a significantly higher injury risk than office environments, First Aid Level 2 is strongly recommended and increasingly required by principal contractors and site safety auditors. United Training Centre offers First Aid Level 1 and 2 training at all 5 locations.
Mines in South Africa fall under the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996, which has specific first aid requirements that exceed the basic OHS Act provisions. Most mining companies require First Aid Level 2 as the minimum for designated mine first aiders, and Level 3 for mine rescue team members. DMR inspectors verify first aider qualifications during mine inspections. United Training Centre trains mine first aiders from Level 1 through to Level 3 at our Nelspruit, Witbank, Polokwane and Rustenburg branches.

Yes. United Training Centre accommodates group First Aid bookings for companies of any size — from 5 to 100+ employees. We offer priority scheduling for corporate groups, competitive group pricing for 5 or more employees, and on-site training at your workplace for large teams. We also provide corporate First Aid compliance reports listing all trained employees and their certificate expiry dates. Call +27 81 795 8133 or email machinery.training247@gmail.com for a group training quote.

If a workplace incident occurs and no qualified first aider is available — or the designated first aider’s certificate has expired — the employer is in violation of the OHS Act First Aid Regulations. Consequences include: a compliance notice from the Department of Labour, a Section 54 stop-work order halting all operations, criminal prosecution of the employer and responsible managers under Section 38 of the OHS Act, and possible invalidation of insurance claims related to the incident. Book Your First Aid Training Today — Protect Your Team and Stay OHS Compliant

Every employer who does not have a currently certified first aider on duty is violating the OHS Act — right now. A DOL inspector does not give warnings for expired first aid certificates. The cost of non-compliance — a stop-work order, a fine, an invalidated insurance claim or a worker who dies because no one knew how to help — is immeasurably higher than R2,500 and 5 days.
