What Does a TLB Operator Do?
A Day in the Life on a Nelspruit Construction Site
If you have ever watched a TLB working on a road or building site and wondered what the job actually involves day to day — this post gives you the complete picture. We cover what a TLB operator does, what the working day looks like on a Nelspruit construction site, what you need to know to do the job well, and how to get your TETA-accredited TLB certificate in 7 days.
The Tractor Loader Backhoe — known universally as a TLB — is a three-in-one machine. It combines a tractor unit in the middle, a front-mounted loader bucket and a rear-mounted backhoe excavator arm. This combination makes the TLB the most versatile single machine on any construction or agricultural site. One TLB can dig a trench, load the excavated material onto a truck, backfill the trench and then grade the surface — all without changing machine.
06:30 — ARRIVAL AND PRE-OPERATION INSPECTION
The TLB operator arrives on site before the shift begins. The first task every day — before starting the engine — is a full pre-operation inspection. This is not optional. Under the OHS Act Driven Machinery Regulations, the operator is legally responsible for inspecting the machine before use. The inspection covers:
07:00 — SITE BRIEFING
The site foreman briefs all operators on the day’s work. For the TLB operator this typically means: which trench to dig, what dimensions are required, where to load material, and any specific hazards to be aware of on the day.
07:30 — ACTIVE WORK BEGINS
Depending on the project, the TLB operator will spend the day doing one or more of the following:
TRENCHING WITH THE BACKHOE
The rear backhoe arm is used to dig trenches for water supply pipes, sewage lines, electricity cables and fibre optic ducting. On a typical Nelspruit municipal infrastructure project, the TLB might be digging a trench 600mm wide and 1.2 metres deep across a residential street. Precision matters — too wide and you waste backfill material, too shallow and the pipe does not comply with regulations.
LOADING WITH THE FRONT BUCKET
After the pipe or cable has been laid in the trench, the TLB uses the front bucket to push gravel or fill material back into the trench — a process called backfilling. The same front bucket is used on agricultural sites to load citrus, avocado or timber onto processing conveyor belts or truck trailers.
LEVELLING AND GRADING
On road construction or building site preparation projects, the TLB uses the front bucket to level, spread and grade material across a surface. This work requires precision — the operator must judge grades visually and make fine bucket adjustments to achieve the required finished level.
13:00 — LUNCH AND MACHINE CLEAN
Operators take a 30-minute to 1-hour lunch break. During this time the TLB is parked safely, engine off, bucket lowered and all controls in neutral. After lunch the operator does a quick mid-shift check of hydraulic fluid levels and tyre condition.
17:00 — END OF SHIFT AND MACHINE PARK-UP
At the end of the shift the TLB is parked on level ground, bucket lowered to the ground, all controls in neutral and the machine locked. The operator completes a shift report noting any faults, fluid checks and daily machine hours. This report goes to the site foreman and becomes part of the maintenance record.
