Rock Drill Operator Training Nelspruit
Accredited Course at Our Nelspruit Campus

United Training Centre offers accredited Rock Drill Operator training at its Nelspruit campus for R8,000. The course covers drilling pattern, machine handling and underground safety for production drilling ahead of blasting — directly relevant to Barberton’s Fairview, Sheba and New Consort underground gold mines, operating for over 130 years and guided at 66,000–69,000oz for FY26. Free accommodation is available for students travelling from outside Nelspruit. Call +27 81 795 8133 to enrol.

Barberton, close to Nelspruit, is home to one of South Africa’s oldest continuously operating gold mining complexes — Fairview, Sheba and New Consort mines, run by Pan African Resources, have been producing underground for over 130 years and are guided to produce 66,000 to 69,000oz in FY26 alone, with a life-of-mine stretching decades further. None of that happens without drilling — every blast in a narrow-reef stope starts with a rock drill operator setting the pattern.

United Training Centre trains job-seekers in Nelspruit for an accredited Rock Drill Operator qualification. The course costs R8,000 and covers drilling pattern and technique, machine handling, and underground safety procedure.

Training happens at our Nelspruit campus. Free accommodation is available for students travelling in from outside the immediate area. Call us on +27 81 795 8133 to enrol.

Drilling the Stope — What Rock Drill Work Looks Like Underground at Barberton

Barberton’s orebodies are narrow-reef, shear-zone hosted gold veins, which means drilling has to follow the reef precisely — drill off-pattern and you either miss the high-grade ore or waste blasting effort on waste rock. A rock drill operator sets and drills the blast hole pattern in the working face before charging and blasting crews take over.

Rock drill work underground covers reading the drilling pattern for that section of reef, handling the drill safely in confined stope conditions, and working to the tight tolerances narrow-reef mining demands.

Underground drilling and blasting work is highly regulated under the Mine Health and Safety Act, and mines require certified operators before allowing anyone to drill in a working stope.

⛏️ BARBERTON MINES — FAIRVIEW, SHEBA, NEW CONSORT

Ongoing production drilling across these narrow-reef gold mines requires certified rock drill operators.

🪨 OTHER UNDERGROUND AND HARD-ROCK OPERATIONS

Mines across South Africa’s broader gold and hard-rock sector also require certified rock drill operators.
