ADT vs 777 Dump Truck — What is the Difference?

United Training Centre offers training on two types of dump trucks. Here is the difference and where each is used:

ADT — ARTICULATED DUMP TRUCK (R5,000)

An ADT is a large off-road dump truck with an articulated joint between the cab and the dump body — allowing it to flex across rough, uneven terrain. ADTs are used on:

  • Construction sites — moving bulk material across soft or uneven ground
  • Civil engineering — earthworks, embankment building and dam construction
  • Quarries — hauling aggregate and rock from the pit to the crusher
  • Road construction — earth and fill movement on N4 and municipal road projects
  • Mining — surface material removal and overburden hauling

    • 777 — RIGID BODY MINING DUMP TRUCK (R6,500)

    The CAT 777 is a large rigid-frame mining haul truck used for high-volume, high-tonnage ore and waste material hauling on surface mining operations. It is used on:

  • Surface coal mines — Mpumalanga's coal belt and Nkangala District
  • Open pit chrome, platinum and iron ore operations
  • Large quarries — high-volume aggregate and rock removal

    • The 777 is a mining-level qualification — more specialised and commanding a significantly higher salary than ADT operation.

  • Pre-operation inspection — full walk-around procedure
  • Mine Health and Safety Act requirements
  • Payload management and body weight distribution
  • Haul road rules and mine traffic management
  • Emergency braking and retarder use on gradients

    • PRACTICAL (Days 3–6)

  • Machine startup, warm-up and shutdown
  • Haul road discipline — speed, spacing and passing rules
  • Loading from face shovel and large excavators
  • Tipping at dump site — reversing, spotting and dumping safely
  • Descending steep grades — retarder and engine braking
  • Night driving and reduced visibility procedures
