From structural steelwork at Sappi’s Ngodwana pulp mill to the pressure-pipe welding Sasol runs its own dedicated apprenticeship programme for at Secunda, welding is one of the most versatile trade skills in Mpumalanga’s industrial economy. Different jobs call for different welding processes, which is why we train all five accredited types under one roof.

Choosing the Right Welding Process for the Job You Want
ARC WELDING is the foundational process most general fabrication and structural work runs on — the starting point for most welding careers and the process behind most on-site repair work.
CO2 WELDING (MIG) suits faster production welding on thinner materials, common in general fabrication shops and manufacturing.
TIG WELDING gives the cleanest, most controlled weld, used where appearance and precision matter, including stainless steel and thin-gauge work.
ALUMINIUM WELDING is its own specialised skill, needed for transport, trailer and food-grade equipment fabrication where standard steel processes don’t apply.
DOUBLE CODED WELDING is the upgrade path for experienced welders moving into pressure vessel and pipeline work, the standard required in petrochemical environments like Sasol’s Secunda operations.
Most working welders end up combining two or three of these, which is why training in more than one process at once tends to pay off.
Welding work on any commercial or industrial site requires a recognised qualification in the specific process being used, which is why employers ask for MERSETA-accredited training before hiring.

⚡ SASOL SECUNDA PETROCHEMICAL OPERATIONS
Pressure vessel and pipeline welding, at Double Coded standard, is in active demand — Sasol runs its own welding apprenticeship programme alongside PDPS specifically for this work. Secunda is roughly 260km from Nelspruit, so this reflects provincial-scale demand for the qualification rather than a local commute.

No. Training is done on our workshop equipment. We’ll confirm exactly what to bring, if anything, when you call to enrol.
These courses build the practical welding skills employers look for, but the Trade Test and Red Seal certification are a separate process through the QCTO, usually after a period of paid work experience. We offer a separate Trade Test Preparation course for students ready to take that step.
